Our client, a Denver resident, approached us with a clear objective: to replace and enlarge his existing concrete driveway. The goal was to make it easier to access his vehicles while ensuring that all concrete surfaces adjacent to his home were properly leveled. Furthermore, effective drainage was a priority, particularly diverting water away from the structure to prevent damage during heavy rainfalls and the upcoming winter months.


Upon initial assessment, it was evident that the current concrete driveway and sidewalks had deteriorated and were no longer serving their purpose efficiently. The layout required a strategic redesign, focusing on proper slope and elevation adjustments to accommodate water runoff and improve vehicle accessibility.


Day 1 - Demolition and Preparation


Our crew commenced the project on September 17, 2024. The first step involved tearing out the existing driveway, front sidewalk, and the connecting path from the driveway to the entrance—the stoop. This process required precision and care given that this is an older home.


Once the demolition was complete, our team focused on the base preparation. We installed approximately 3 to 4 inches of road base material, which was thoroughly compacted to provide a solid foundation. This step is crucial as it ensures stability and longevity for the new concrete installation.


Setting the Foundation - Reinforcement and Forming


After preparing the base, our skilled team installed reinforcement —specifically number three rebar—every two feet on center. This reinforcement is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the concrete, especially in a climate like Denver’s where freeze-thaw cycles can be taxing on materials.

Next, the crew formed out the sections for a 4-inch pour, ensuring that all areas were meticulously leveled and ready for concrete. Our approach emphasizes collaboration with homeowners; thus, prior to pouring, we reviewed the formed areas with the client to address any concerns or adjustments needed.


Collaboration with the Homeowner


Ensuring customer satisfaction is at the heart of our operations. Before proceeding with the pour, we engaged with the homeowner to discuss the necessary elevation changes. Given the unique geometry of the site, it was necessary to install the driveway at a different elevation than the garage floor. This adjustment was critical to achieving a two percent slope for optimal drainage.


Our team explained these adjustments and received the homeowner’s approval, ensuring everyone was aligned. This step is integral in all our projects, as it allows for transparency and offers the homeowner an opportunity to provide input before finalizing key decisions.


Pouring and Finishing the New Driveway


With everything in place and approved, our crew began pouring the concrete for the driveway, parallel sidewalk, and front path leading from the street. The pour was completed using a 4500 PSI air-entrained concrete mix, chosen for its durability and resistance to Denver’s harsh weather conditions.


The finishing touches included control joints placed every four feet on center for the sidewalks and every eight feet for the driveway. These joints are fundamental in preventing cracking by allowing the concrete to naturally expand and contract. The surface received a broom finish, applied in opposing directions to create a practical, yet visually appealing, checkered texture.




Addressing Drainage and Maintenance


An important aspect of this project was ensuring proper drainage. We expertly redirected downspouts under the new concrete, channeling water to daylight in the yard—a strategic move to protect both the house and concrete from water damage.


However, it’s crucial to note that while our systems aid in directing water away, regular maintenance is needed. Homeowners must keep these drainage lines free of debris such as leaves and pine needles to prevent clogging, ensuring the system operates efficiently throughout its lifespan.

Final Touches and Project Completion


Following the completion of the concrete pour, our crew took care of post-project cleanup, leaving the site tidy and ready for use. We left a few forms overnight to allow the concrete to set properly. Upon returning, we sealed the driveway and backfilled any areas where forms had been removed, marking the official completion of the project on September 18, 2024.

The project’s total cost amounted to $13,700, covering 821 square feet. This comprehensive overhaul provided the homeowner with a renewed sense of confidence, knowing that his driveway was now a safe, functional entrance that would withstand Denver’s unpredictable weather.
